9/11: One Day in America
About the series
9/11: One Day in America reconstructs September 11 through the people who experienced it, drawing on more than 1,000 hours of archive and over 50 first-person interviews to place the audience inside the events as they unfolded.
Daniel Bogado directed all six episodes and led the filmmaking team across two years of production. Made by 72 Films for National Geographic in collaboration with the 9/11 Memorial & Museum, the series involved an extensive search through broadcast, professional and personal archive. The team then worked to identify and track down the people captured in that footage, reconnecting extraordinary images with the individuals whose stories lay behind them.
Built entirely around archive and first-person testimony, without narration or retrospective expert commentary, the series was designed to make the events feel immediate rather than historical.
The series was met with widespread critical acclaim. The Wall Street Journal described it as “deliberately, painstakingly, enthrallingly thorough”, while The New Statesman wrote that it “forces you to endure the day as never before; to experience it more directly, in greater detail.”
9/11: One Day in America went on to win two News & Documentary Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Historical Documentary, alongside the RTS Award, Broadcast Award and Televisual Bulldog Award, with further nominations at BAFTA, FOCAL International and the Grierson Awards.
